Reef Protection
Reefs, as we know them today have existed since the Jurassic Age, roughly for 190 million years. In this long period of time
there has evolved an ecosystem with an estimated 400 000 species. At present we know only 60 000 of them.
The coral reefs are referred to as the "tropical rainforests" of the sea. It is because of this abundance, we must take great
care to protect it. The delicate balance of this precious ecosystem must be kept in order to maintain local ecology.
You needn’t be a marine biologist to appreicate the wonder of this marine life. As well, you needn’t be a scientist to
comprehend the importance of protectiong the reef.
This being said, we urge all divers, snorkellers, and those who pariticpate in acitivites in the sea, to do their part to
encourage and maintain a healthy ecosystem. This includes taking care not to disturb underwater life and not taking anything,
no matter how small, from the sea.
This also includes proper disposal of all rubbish, and picking up after others who are less considerate. We also have a
responsiblity to spread this message to others and to ensure the reef is respected. Our goal is to ensure that we will all
be able to dive these sites in the many years to come!!
